Flavio’s journey takes an uplifting turn to inspire grateful children.

In November 2023, Southern California native Flavio seized the opportunity to join Actions Beyond Words (ABW) on a humanitarian mission to Ukraine. Despite the unfamiliarity of working in a war zone and experiencing below-zero temperatures, Flavio’s eagerness prevailed. Co-founders Simon Massey and Travis Goode welcomed him in Poland after a grueling 25+ hour journey, marking the beginning of an extraordinary adventure.

With minimal sleep, Flavio joined the team in loading cargo vans with aid. Over two weeks, he traversed 1500 miles of snow-covered Ukraine, gaining firsthand insight into the resilience and strength of its people.

A pivotal moment unfolded in downtown Kyiv after a dental equipment delivery. Over lunch with fellow volunteers Oliver and Nick, from Peace for Ukraine, ABW discovered a pressing need in a war-torn area – toys and candy for 300+ school children on St. Nicholas Day, just days away. Feeling inspired by the incredible work of Oliver and Nick, Flavio generously donated half the required funds, prompting ABW to commit to covering the rest and taking charge of the delivery.

Following the next aid drop, the ABW team, led by Flavio, rushed to a Ukrainian department store. With 10 shopping carts filled with $2,000 worth of toys and candies, they created a heartwarming scene that drew curious looks from locals. Despite a snowstorm approaching, the team hastily packed the goodies in the parking lot to prevent damage.

Undeterred by air sirens echoing – a common occurrence in Ukraine – the team hurried to the shipping depot, loading 22 boxes destined for the children of southeastern Ukraine. The deadline? St. Nicholas Day, just four days away.

Despite unexpected challenges, Flavio expressed gratitude for being part of this impactful mission. The team, including Flavio, was overjoyed to receive photos of teachers and school staff opening the boxes, confirming their timely arrival. In the backdrop of Ukraine’s challenges, Flavio’s journey with ABW stands as a testament to the profound impact of unexpected acts of kindness. The team’s unwavering commitment to delivering aid and spreading joy during difficult times serves as a beacon of hope for the resilient people of Ukraine. Through these acts, ABW continues to make a difference in the lives of those affected by adversity, one unexpected gesture at a time.
